How the unit converter works

Each category uses a base (reference) unit. For example: meters (m) for length, kilograms (kg) for weight, liters (L) for volume, seconds (s) for time, and so on. Your value is first converted to the base unit, then to the target unit - a simple method that reduces rounding errors.

A brief history of units

The metric system was created in the late 18th century to standardize measurements (meter, kilogram, liter). In contrast, units such as the inch, yard, or mile come from older traditions and were standardized later. Today, we often switch between systems - which is why a clear and reliable unit converter is so useful.

FAQ

What conversions can I perform with this calculator?

You can convert units of length (m, km, inches, feet, yards, miles), weight (kg, g, lb, oz), volume (L, mL, US gallons, fluid ounces), temperature (°C, °F, K), area (m², km², ft², acres, hectares), data (B, KB, MB, GB, TB), speed (m/s, km/h, mph, knots), and time (ms, s, min, h, days).

Why are units displayed as “Name (symbol)”?

To avoid ambiguity and improve readability. For example, Liters (L) or Cubic meters (m³) clearly indicate both the unit name and its symbol, especially when multiple systems coexist.

Does the converter round results?

Yes. Results are displayed with an appropriate number of decimal places, and unnecessary trailing zeros are removed for clarity.

Can I convert negative values (temperature, speed)?

Yes. Negative values are supported - for example −10 °C to °F, or signed speeds in certain contexts.

Data units: do you use 1000 or 1024?

For standard computing conversions, this converter uses base 1024 (1 KB = 1024 B, 1 MB = 1024 KB, etc.). Depending on the context (storage vs telecom), base 1000 may also be used elsewhere.

Is my data stored?

No. All calculations are performed locally in your browser.
